Two Sentence Reviews: April Reads

April was a bit of a slow month for me with just five books read. I don't know if it was getting vaccinated, the warmer weather coming in, or life getting in the way - but I had some trouble really focusing in on books this month. Since I wasn't in the mood to be super critical, here's my two sentence reviews without a star system. Reads are listed in order of how likely I'd be to recommend:

Last Summer at the Golden Hotel by Elyssa Friedland: The Golden Hotel once was the premier destination of the Catskills but now struggles to even attract guests. The owning families, the Goldmans and Weingolds, meet for a summer to decide the hotel's fate and learn about themselves, the property, and the meaning of family in the process.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: Noemí rushes to the Mexican countryside after receiving a frantic letter from her cousin and finds herself in a world so far detached from her reality she struggles to find what's real. This book is moody, mysterious, and literally leaves your skin crawling.

After All These Years by Susan Isaacs: Rosie Meyers husband leaves her for a younger woman and then, months later, is found dead in her kitchen. To save herself, Rosie knows she has to discover who killed her estranged husband and why they would frame her. (For a murder mystery book, this book has so many moments of humor it's actually quite endearing.)

Where the Grass is Green and the Girls are Pretty by Lauren Weisberger: Peyton and Skye are two sisters living in the same wealthy-white-woman troupe, just opposite ends of that spectrum: Peyton is all glam while Skye is as boho as they come. Both women love their children fiercely, but a college admissions scandal shakes their families in ways neither could imagine.

This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett: This book is made up of non-fiction short stories Patchett has previously published. The stories range from the struggles of writer to the perils of divorce and the joys of marriage - I liked this read but would say you should like Patchett to pick this book up.
